Lamb cutlets are great (tho a bit expensive)~ bought a pack at coles the other day - the lean ones with no fat!! Nice~!! Like steak, they require minimal attention!

Went to mum's for dinner tonight. As mum has some prawns at home, we decided to make XO sauce prawn and vermicelli in hot pot!! i've made this a few times now, but every time, the vermicelli seems to be the winner (even over the prawns)!!! that must be all the flavour goodness being absorbed by the vermicelli - the garlic, eshallot, xo sauce, prawn head juice and the chicken stock!!!

Post #6 - Day off challenge

A good way to kill time but not feel the day wasted is to cook and to try something new!! so as i was flipping the cookbook "tempted - 150 very wicked desserts" (one that i havent made anything out of... yet), i decided on the strawberry almond torte:

largely because of this delicious-looking pic and it doesnt look too difficult to make:

this time, i want to make small versions to give some away, so i used friand tins:

i like dishes where you get a balance of veg and meat, esp pasta dishes as often that is the only thing you eat for a meal.

-Spiral pasta with beef capsicum asparagus mushroom in creamy sauce-

i find that cream is quite an indispensable ingredient. i have tried using milk and corn starch as replacement but the end result is just different
:^( i suppose thats why a lot of yummy food are unhealthy....

Went to the butcher shop today and bought something diff - spare ribs!!! I dont mind using my hands when it comes to eating, so why not give it a try?! On the way home i was thinking what marinade would go well with ribs. Decided to use orange in the end! it was yum! The orange juice didnt have too much of an impact, but orange peel is a must!! i think i'll need to marinade for a while longer next time too. maybe poking the meat before i marinate might do the trick?!

Thursday night, ate simple. Great thing about pasta is that you can basically chuck anything in to make diff combos:

~ different types of pasta - spaghetti, linguinni, fetuccini, spirals, risotto...
~ different sauce base - tomato, cream, lemon, pesto, tomato with cream...
~ different ingredients - you can be as imaginative as you can here!!

But my basic ingredients for pasta are usually onion, leek, garlic, eshallots, and sometimes anchovies.

Dont forget that tomato LIKES SALT!!!! this time round it was a bit bland - more seasoning next time!!

Took so long playing with the new blog - formatting and layout and all that! all fun but ;p Now i'm getting the hang of it!!

Here's the continuation of dinner last night...

-"Yin choi" in chicken broth with garlic + dried scallop-

Washing veggies can get v fiddly for me. I mean, there's got to be a way of doing it more quickly... So far i've tried the "running-the-tap" method and the "swimming pool" method, but neither one seems to be quicker than the other. Yin choi i would probably rate about 3/5. 5/5 so far would be watercress as you would find the occasional snail or leech.

Hubby wasn't on-call last night, so we had time for dessert too!

-Steamed pork ribs in cumquat sauce-

I like adding fruit elements into savoury dishes and we're lucky to have some homemade cumquat jam made by hubby's mum!

My food diary

Sometimes, same ideas come across my mind. Getting started on a food diary or a food blog is one of them. Not that i'm good at cooking... but i do cook, and most the time i quite enjoy cooking, and i looooove eating. So why not?

Even just so that i can remember what i've cooked.

All these reasons *excuses*.

So here i start.
